Especially for a first-time attendee, the National Farm Machinery Show can be a bit overwhelming. Held each February in Louisville, Kentucky, the event eats up 1.2 million square feet of space across its three main exhibition halls — it’s certainly a lot of ground to cover in just a few days. And most of all, you want to see all the best stuff, right? New tractors, implement advancements, drone technology, tires, cattle chutes, grain bins, moisture sensors, solar panels — the NFMS has 900 booths of innovations that are a lot of fun to explore. And a nine-hour day can fly by quickly. The 2020 show is already starting off a bit differently than in years past, thanks to the addition of attendee registration. Aside from parking, the show has long been free, and people came and went pretty much as they pleased. Now, registration, which includes questions about what part of the ag industry you’re in and whether you have the authority to make purchasing decisions for an operation, is a factor. It’s been 15 years since Demons and Wizards, the collaborative group starring Iced Earth’s Jon Schaffer and Blind Guardian’s Hansi Kürsch, released a new record. III, their first album since issuing Touched By the Crimson King in 2005, is out now and when the two stopped by New York City, we dove into some of the major events in rock and metal that have taken place since we last heard from the group. The metropolitan region has a population of 2.2 million, and the average household uses 222 gallons of water per day. That results in approximately 489 million gallons of daily water consumption.  That is a lot of water, especially for a region that averages just greater than 4 inches of rainfall every year. That water is becoming even more scarce. In a stretch that ended in January 2018, Las Vegas went 116 straight days without rain, its longest stretch ever. In 2019, the region had a “good” year with rainfall netting more than 7 inches. In many U.S. communities, that figure is merely a good soaking from a one- or two-day tropical storm. The Southern Nevada Water Authority adopted conservation measures in 2003, and the programs have dramatically reduced water consumption. The community used 27 billion gallons less in 2018 than in 2002, even as the population increased by 690,000 residents. Prescription drug spending has been rising steadily across the United States since the late 1970s.1 Congress is considering multiple approaches at the federal level to reduce drug spending,2 but state policymakers can also act independently to address this issue in the interim. States that wish to lower their prescription drug expenditures face a number of challenges. Federal law preempts the most sweeping, comprehensive state reforms that could lower prescription drug prices.3 Moreover, the complexity of the prescription drug supply chain and the myriad interactions that different state agencies have with different parts of the supply chain require a multifaceted approach. Last month I introduced the concept of V-grooving, a viable option if you need to produce cosmetically critical bends with very tight bend radii. If you see an architectural panel bend with an outside radius that’s extremely tight for the material thickness—and it looks perfect, free of any trace of cracking—chances are it was formed with V-grooving. V-groove bending can establish the bend line and bend angle using grooves cut along the bend line. It’s also known as score-folding, V-cutting, and back-scoring. The grooving process, performed by a separate cutting machine, produces a V-cut located at the bend line. After groove-cutting, the bend can be completed at the press brake or even by hand. At the press brake, the operator can bend the grooved metal into various angles and shapes using off-the-shelf or custom tools. The machine is 35 percent smaller than the conventional 3CX backhoe loader and reflects the company’s thinking that modern construction sites will become increasingly congested, particularly in urban areas. The size definitely leads one to do a double take, particularly next to other iron. The backhoe loader is a mere 8 feet 3 inches high and 6 feet 2 inches wide, and the unit’s four-wheel steering allows a turning circle of just over 19 feet. “It’s the only construction-grade backhoe loader this size, and not an ag tractor with a backhoe attachment,” says JCB backhoe loader product manager Diego Butzke, who is on hand to review the features and controls before the test.
