The Value of Blown Fiber Technology in an FTTH Environment

Blown fiber systems offer numerous advantages over traditional fiber systems, including reduced material and installation costs, fewer fiber connection points, simplified repair and maintenance, and a migration path for future applications. Civilization is on the cusp of tremendous communications breakthroughs, awakened by radical and disruptive innovation in the arenas of artificial intelligence, blockchain and augmented reality. In anticipation of new and bandwidth-hungry applications, service providers are in intense competition to reach consumers faster and with the ultimate end-state networks – fiber to the everything – FTTx. What does this mean for the broadband industry? Technology innovation is an important success factor in the growth of information and communications technology. The internet of things (IoT) and the integration of building applications (referred to as “intelligent buildings”) are major innovation drivers in broadband. Businesses and homes now require more bandwidth at faster speeds and with lower latency. As a result, system integrators are deploying more fiber systems for the applications of today and tomorrow. Service providers are on the verge of of...

US EPA consults on TSCA information collection requests

The EPA has requested public comments on its proposed extension of three TSCA information collection requests (ICRs) that are set to expire in 2020. An ICR describes reporting, record keeping, surveying and other information collection requirements that may be imposed on the public by a specific federal agency policy, and must be renewed on a periodic basic.  The first of the ICRs covers procedures for requesting a chemical risk evaluation under TSCA, and is due to expire on 30 September. In December, the EPA granted its first such manufacturer requests under the reformed TSCA, for the high molecular weight phthalates DINP and DIDP. The agency also is also looking to renew an ICR on formaldehyde standards for composite wood products. Its existing ICR on the regulation is set to expire on 30 June. Amendments to these regulations under TSCA were finalised in August 2019. The last renewal will cover an ICR on chemical-specific rules for certain nanoscale materials under TSCA section 8(a), which is set to expire on 31 August.  The burden estimate associated with the manufacturer-requested risk evaluations is largely consistent with the current ICR. The latter two have seen reductio...

Connecting decision makers to a dynamic network of information, people and ideas, Bloomberg quickly and accurately delivers business and financial information, news and insight around the world. The inventor Buckminster Fuller once described technological progress as “ephemeralization.” Sunbeams and breezes are replacing coal and oil as energy sources, brands are more important than buildings to corporations, and fiat money has supplanted gold and silver. So it seems reasonable to conclude that the periodic table of elements—that wonky taxonomy of physical stuff such as copper, iron, mercury, and sulfur—is passé, no more relevant than a manual typewriter. Except exactly the opposite is true. Matter still matters. And on the 150th anniversary of the periodic table’s formulation by the Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev, it’s more important than it’s ever been. Read More Scientists have long sought to catalog the known elements: In 1789, Antoine Lavoisier sorted them by their properties. By ...

How to Protect Your ID Card Access Control System From Getting Hacked

Most security professionals are not aware of one of the leading gateways for hackers to attack their cyber systems. It’s through their own physical security systems, especially wired cameras or contactless card access control systems. Let’s consider the latter. When a 125kHz proximity card is powered up by getting in “proximity” of a reader, it immediately begins to transmit a fixed binary code number. As a result, it’s also possible to use a device that will stealthily power up the card from a distance to read and record its internal data. An attacker can then easily use the card’s information to let unauthorized people in. Adding to the problem is that Wiegand, the industry standard over-the-air protocol commonly used to communicate credential data from a card to an electronic access reader, is no longer inherently secure due to its original obscure and nonstandard nature. Hence, ID harvesting has become one of the most lucrative hacking activities. Yet now there is an even bigger problem. To get into IT and critical infrastructure operational technology (OT) systems, hackers simply use the card/reader protocol to enter a facility via the public access computer system (PACS), ...

It always seemed strange to me that the peak season of buying a car in Ireland

It always seemed strange to me that the peak season of buying a car in Ireland coincides with the peak season of abstinence after Christmas. While you might save a few euros while losing a few pounds, if you avoid the chocolate aisle, you’re unlikely to pay for the cost of a new car. With that in mind, here is a list of the new cars with the best value for money currently on sale (and please note that these are not necessarily the best cars, but those that do remarkably good work for a strikingly low price- Value for money least affordable, price). The Dacia Logan is usually not a car that can be recommended. It is basically a combi version of the Sandero hatchback model. That said, it’s very cheap, moderately cheerful, and not what you’d call a bundle of fun. Nevertheless, it is very important and that is the practicality. Based on a super mini hatch it may be, but the Komban Logan has a trunk – 573 liters behind the seats and under the cargo area cover. This is more than a BMW 3 Series Touring, for around a quarter of the price. For families on a budget, this is the ultimate “fire and forget” car – just open the tailgate, light everything you need to carry, and forget about th...

The Expedition 61 crewmembers are also ramping up for a trio of spacewalks set to begin next week. NASA Flight Engineer Jessica Meir and Commander Luca Parmitano of ESA (European Space Agency) started Thursday collecting their blood samples. The duo spun the samples in a centrifuge and stowed them in a science freezer for later analysis. The astronauts also joined cosmonaut Alexander Skvortsov for a series of eye checks throughout the day. Skvortsov also partnered up with cosmonaut Oleg Skripochka for cardiac research. After some Russian lab maintenance work, the pair also filmed educational activities to promote spaceflight for audiences on Earth. Parmitano later tested how living in microgravity influences an astronaut’s perception of time. At the end of the workday, the ESA commander serviced a research incubator located in the Unity module. Live bands announced for free summer concerts at the River Common in Wilkes-Barre

WILKES-BARRE — Luzerne County Manager C. David Pedri held a media announcement at the River Common on Friday morning to announce the live bands that will be performing at three free summer concerts at the park along the Susquehanna River. “We have some amazing national touring groups coming in to play right here in Wilkes-Barre city,” Pedri said. “It will be a huge event.” Pedri said the county Transportation Authority will provide free bus service to the downtown intermodal terminal, which is a short walk to the River Common, from 4 p.m. to 1 a.m., for concert attendees. More than 2,000 free parking spaces are available within walking distance of the park, including those at the county courthouse parkade on Water Street, he said. The county sheriff’s department will provide security. “So ladies and gentlemen, I don’t want to hear any excuses,” Pedri said, inviting residents and visitors to come with blankets, chairs and children. The event was designed to promote the county-owned recreation facility and change the perception this area doesn’t have events happening, Pedri said. “I’m tired of people saying there’s nothing to do here in Luzerne County,” Pedri said, adding that th...

IDEC uses additive manufacturing to cut composite tooling costs: CompositesWorld

IDEC explains how Stratasys 3D printing helped the company cut the time, cost and material waste involved with traditional composite molding. Diego Calderón, Structural Analysis manager at IDEC explains how Stratasys FDM additive manufacturing and ULTEM 1010 resin cut time, cost and material waste in the manufacture of a curved aircraft wing. With most preforms, the composite fiber is laid up on top of the preform and the tool is then heated to take the shape of the mold. In this instance, instead of heating the preform tool, the unusual application required the composite material itself to be heated using an electric current. During JEC World 2019, I visited the Stratasys (Rehovot, Israel) booth where Diego Calderón, Structural Analysis manager at IDEC (Araba, Spain), a Spanish provider of composite solutions for aerospace, explained how Stratasys additive manufacturing helped IDEC cut the time, cost and material waste involved with traditional composite molding. IDEC’s government-funded project centered around the testing of a new composite material and its Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) process for the manufacture of a curved aircraft wing. The particular challenge in producin...

High streets face Black Friday sales flop as 11m hunt bargains online

Shoppers started queuing outside stores at 3am this morning in a desperate bid to snap up Black Friday discounts but many stores saw a slow start to the day as bargain hunters went online instead. This year’s pre-Christmas sale is set to be a record-breaking £3billion Black Friday bonanza, but some £2.3bn of that is set to be spent online instead of on the High Street. There was a bleak picture in major shopping outlets, supermarkets and high streets including Oxford Street in west London and the Trafford Centre in Manchester at the start of the day, with no queues and little footfall.  The scenes in British shops are a far cry from 2014, the year after Asda imported the tradition from the US, when thousands of shoppers camped out overnight and dashed into stores to get their hands on discounted items, with some even coming to blows. Meanwhile in America, where the tradition originated as a post-Thanksgiving celebration, chaotic scenes unfolded in malls across the country with thousands lining up outside of Macy’s Herald Square in New York City, and nearby Best Buy store in Manhattan a similar vision of chaos. But there were still some keen British bargain hunters w...
