Racing! Goodbye to the winter/spring Santa Anita meeting

Hello, my name is John Cherwa, and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter, as we present both sides of the out-of-competition testing issue. Those of you who are critical of how horse racing is run in California might have found Thursday’s meeting of the California Horse Racing Board a prime example of the dysfunction in the industry. Golden Gate was the just the warmup act to the discussion on out-of-competition drug testing. What makes it even crazier is this is a topic that both sides believe is a good idea. It got rather heated when Alan Balch, head of the California trainers, and Greg Avioli, head of the California owners, got into heated exchanges with Dr. Rick Arthur, the CHRB’s chief vet. (Last time I wrote about this, I left off the “Dr.” and heard about it from one reader. You know who you are, sonny.) It was great theater but hardly a moment that those involved can be proud of, especially Avioli and Arthur. At the center of the friction is that Balch and Avioli believed they were assured the topic was going back to committee, which is where it eventually went. Arthur presented it more as an in-the-moment mandate. One day, you’ll be able to read all the name-call...

This weekend should be optimal time for turkey hunting

While the spring turkey season is well underway across Texas, now may be the best chance to bag a long-bearded tom. Eastern turkey reports: My Texas Hunt Harvest App, free on the web for iOS and Android phones, or online at tpwd.texas.gov/turkey “This weekend will probably be the ideal time to be out,” said Jason Hardin, turkey program leader of the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department. Early in the season, breeding hens may have made it difficult to get a busy gobbler to respond to calls, he explained. By the first or second weekend in April, hens begin to nest and more gobblers spread out looking for love, Hardin said. “After the initial breeding activity, the first nest attempts are beginning about now. Hens probably already are starting to lay eggs,” he said. “I’m not a die-hard opening-day hunter. I’ve found a lot more success later in the season in Texas.” While hens hunker down to lay and incubate eggs with short breaks to eat and drink, gobbling gobblers pick up again as they search for hens or regroup with other toms. Reports from around the state indicate that toms are gobbling on the roost but quit when they hit the ground and do not gobble much afterward, Hardin sa...

For limited use, buy a press that uses a big hydraulic jack as opposed to one

For limited use, buy a press that uses a big hydraulic jack as opposed to one that has a cylinder built in,” says Henry Shakal. “You eliminate maintenance problems. If anything goes wrong, you could simply replace the jack, and you can use that jack for other things.” Retired in the late-1990s, Shakal still operates a farm equipment repair shop at Boyd, in north-central Wisconsin. At Butler, Missouri, baby boomer Raymond Wiskur operates a mobile farm machinery repair service, has his own shop at home, and says much the same thing. “If you need a shop press, all kinds of companies make them. Mine is real cheap and partly manufactured. I made crossbars so it could extend as wide as I need, and I put it on wheels,” Wiskur says. Both men agree that a 20-ton hydraulic press will meet the needs on most farms for jobs like replacing bearings and pressing gears. You can buy these for less than $500 – complete with a bottle jack and cranking handle – from tool suppliers. That could be all your shop needs for many years. The standard shop press on a farm gets very little use, but it is important when it is needed. It may be 50 years old, dirty, greasy, and working fine. It probably has st...

Why Howard S. Glazer, DDS, FAGD, recommends Aura Easyflow from SDI

Howard S. Glazer, DDS, FAGD, discusses Aura Easyflow, a new flowable resin composite material from SDI. SDI has extended its AuraEasy line with Aura Easyflow, a new flowable resin composite material. Dental Economics columnist Howard S. Glazer, DDS, FAGD, likes this product because its four shades simplify shade matching, making it easy to create beautiful, esthetic restorations. This material also has high compressive strength, good wear resistance, and good polishability. Watch Dr. Glazer’s video below to learn more. Dr. Amisha Singh describes her trip to the DMG headquarters in Hamburg, Germany, where she meets emerging dental KOLs from around the world. During restorative appointments when removing caries and a bit of bleeding . . . happens . . . what’s your protocol? Bases, liners, and cements may be the go-to, but which is best for what scenario? Some may argue that as long as you place something on the floor of the cavity that acts as a “buffer” between the filling and pulp, you’re golden, but Dr. Stacey Simmons probes a little deeper into the not-so-black-and-white world of bases and liners. Where will dentistry be in 2023? Dental Economics’ Chief Editor Dr. Chris ...

I seem to switch my everyday carry bag about once a year.  In early 2017, I

I seem to switch my everyday carry bag about once a year.  In early 2017, I decided to make a switch from shoulder bag to backpack. I work in an office and drive to work, so I don’t need to carry that much.  Still, I like to pack light yet be prepared. My trusty backpack is the Maxpedition Pygmy Falcon II.  It’s one of their smallest dual-strap backpacks, yet has two side mesh pouches that are great for water bottles, and has just enough attachment points on the outside to keep me happy. The backpack doesn’t have a padded back or much in terms of organization, so I added the Condor Outdoor VA7 Pack Insert to keep things in check.  Note the small LED clip on light sits on top of the insert to help me find things in the dark. 1. Stainless steel tweezers These handy tweezers come with their own snap-in holder that you can attach to a keyring, loop, etc. 2. Trauma shears A carry-over from my EMT training.  The blunted tip is less likely to poke you and cut with great strength. 3. Wiha screwdriver set This five piece set has most of the small slotted and Philips sizes you’ll need for most small screws.  Contains slotted 1.5, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 blades. The Enugu Electricity Distribution PLC (EEDC) has expressed deep concern over the increasing rate of vandalization

The Enugu Electricity Distribution PLC (EEDC) has expressed deep concern over the increasing rate of vandalization of its electrical installations across the South East. In a statement by its Head of Communications, Mr. Emeka Ezeh, in Enugu on Tuesday, EEDC described vandalism as a clog hindering its operations. Ezeh said that despite several imprisonments and arrests of vandals, in addition to the efforts made by the organization in engaging customers, as well as key stakeholders within its network, the unpleasant trend had continued to raise its ugly head. It said the act was “subjecting electricity customers to darkness, inconveniencing them and also impacting on our revenue. “Just recently, the duo of Okereke Ugochukwu and Paul Kelechi were arrested by the villagers at Obinagu Umuadar, for vandalizing 11KV -T-Off, carting away about thirteen spans of cable, belonging to EEDC, located at Obinagu Umuadar, Isuochi, in Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State. “Another suspected vandal identified as Chukwuebuka Igwe, an indigene of Ebonyi State was apprehended by some members of Ogbo-Otu Ikenga, Ogidi, in Idemili Local Government Area of Anambra State, while in possession ...

They adorn the ends of Cat5 network patch cables and the flat satin cables that come

They adorn the ends of Cat5 network patch cables and the flat satin cables that come with all-in-one printers that we generally either toss in the scrap bin or throw away altogether. The blocky rectangular plugs, molded of clear plastic and holding gold-plated contacts, are known broadly as modular connectors. They and their socket counterparts have become ubiquitous components of the connected world over the last half-century or so, and unsurprisingly they had their start where so many other innovations began: from the need to manage the growth of the telephone network and reduce costs. Here’s how the modular connector got that way. For the first 80 years or so of the US telephone network, the Bell Company called all the shots. They owned absolutely every bit of equipment in the system – the wires on the poles, the switchgear in the central offices, microwave links, and even the phone sets in customer homes. They had complete control over every aspect of the delivery of their services, and used their monopoly to build an incredibly integrated and durable system. But with great power comes great responsibility, or in the case of a complex technological system prone to breakdown ...
